At universities across China, there is a special group of international students who have traveled across the globe with a thirst for knowledge and a deep curiosity about Chinese culture. As they learn the fundamentals of intellectual property (IP), explore cutting-edge technological innovations, and gain insights into international IP rules, these international students are not only witnesses to China's progress in IP development but also vital bridges connecting China with the global IP community. As these international talents experience China's IP system up close, what kinds of fascinating stories unfold? The Bilingual Weekly invites four international students from Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property (SICIP) of Tongji University and Chongqing Intellectual Property School of Chongqing University of Technology (CQUT) to share their inspiring stories of studying IP in China.

My experience at SICIP was truly a turning point in my life. One of the highlights for me was the opportunity to interact with students from diverse academic backgrounds beyond law, which greatly enriched my academic experience. This multicultural and interdisciplinary exchange enabled meaningful dialogues between our legal systems and cultures. The program at SICIP also offered in-depth exposure to various legal systems and practical case studies. I had the opportunity to learn from professors from different fields, including officials from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), enabling a genuine exchange with some of the most renowned experts. SICIP also organized visits and field trips related to IP, and I will never forget how impactful it was to visit the IP courts in Beijing and Shanghai—a true immersion into the Chinese IP system. This allowed me to appreciate how the IP system has supported the country's technological progress and how central IP has become to this process.

The program at SICIP has played a crucial role in both my professional and academic development. It has not only laid the foundation for my current work as an international IP consultant but also shaped my critical understanding of the role and practical application of IP worldwide. I am now able to advise foreign companies and individuals in IP areas, both within the Chinese legal system and from a broader, international perspective. I would definitely recommend studying IP in China, especially at SICIP. The experience is truly transformative for any young professional aiming to build a global IP career.

Coming to Shanghai in 2022 to focus on IP law opened up new perspectives for me, both academically and culturally. What impressed me most at SICIP was the truly international environment. The curriculum is especially impressive in its balance of theoretical foundations and practical application. There were numerous chances to participate in moot courts, visit exhibitions, and take part in workshops and in-depth seminars. Visiting the WIPO office in China was a highlight. One discussion about China's role in shaping the global standards for IP protection, left a lasting impression. I began to see China not merely as a country adapting to international rules, but as an active contributor to them. This experience made me realize the global scope of IP work and inspired me to pursue a career that bridges jurisdictions and cultures.

My academic experience at SICIP has had a profound impact on my career and personal development. After graduation, I continued to work as a patent expert at the IP Center "Skolkovo." Notably, I became more proactive in fostering collaborations with Chinese partners, drawing on not just the professional skills but also the cross-cultural understanding and sensitivity. Additionally, my time at SICIP equipped me with invaluable comparative insights. In my new capacity as an assistant (lecturer) at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, these experiences have become central to my teaching. For anyone considering studying IP in China, I cannot recommend the experience highly enough.

I had the opportunity to participate in the training program on IP at Chongqing Intellectual Property School of CQUT from November to December 2024. It was a valuable learning journey, offering the chance to engage with lecturers and fellow participants from different countries. It provided not only new knowledge but also meaningful experiences that I will carry forward in my professional work.

One key takeaway that left a strong impression on me was China's focus on the protection of copyright and related rights, especially when it comes to local culture and traditions. The use of IP as a tool to safeguard traditional knowledge and cultural expressions was emphasized throughout the program. The Lao People's Democratic Republic ( Lao PDR) also has a wealth of beautiful traditions and cultural heritage. I truly believe that IP can play a vital role in promoting and protecting our local culture — not just for preservation, but also as a means of creating economic opportunities for communities. Thanks to this program, I now feel more empowered and motivated to contribute to the development and protection of traditional knowledge and copyrights in Lao PDR. Lastly, I would like to say China is a country with thousands of years of history and a rich cultural heritage. Its progress in IP is remarkable. It's a country that we can learn so much from.

The first thing that impressed me upon arriving in Chongqing in 2024 was the moment I stepped off the plane—I could immediately sense that it was a large, well-organized, and orderly city, surrounded by beautiful and majestic mountains. Right after exiting the airport, we were warmly welcomed by professors and volunteers from Chongqing Intellectual Property School of CQUT, who kindly came to greet and take care of us.

The training program had a well-structured and organized curriculum, with excellent facilities including spacious classrooms, modern teaching equipment, and advanced learning media that support teaching and learning effectively. Every instructor actively guided the seminar participants through classroom activities that fostered a dynamic and engaging environment, encouraging everyone to participate more during each session. There were a variety of interactive activities such as games and Q&A sessions, designed to build strong connections among instructors, seminar participants, and volunteers. What I gained from this training includes new knowledge and understanding related to IP. I learned how to properly protect and utilize these forms of IP in accordance with the law. I intend to apply this experience to improve management and planning in creating a professional learning network where participants can exchange experiences and support one another in their work. This will help avoid violations and enable us to better handle potential legal issues related to IP.
